"Postseason Evaluations": PhD Hoops Virtual Coaches Roundtable Notes (March 26, 2021)
1. In your opinion, what is it you’re looking to evaluate within your program immediately after your season is finished? |
*Statistical evaluation on the team identity that was established early in the year (reach goals?) |
*Print out a yearly evaluation (team) goes back 4-5 years to compare to current season (measurable) |
*Start evaluations early so it is fresh to coaches and players when meeting takes place |
*Pulse of the team/individuals as soon as the season is over to promote off-season moral

2. How do you go about evaluating the players on your team? How do you relay that information to your players? |
*Understand where the players’ ceiling can be so you properly evaluate them and give measurable goals |
*Written down on a document, give specific recommendations, drills to use to reach those goals |
*End of season scouting report on YOU, show clips of positive and negative body language of the player |
*Evaluate the teammate aspect, attitude, self-growth as a person (outside the X’s and O’s)

3. For head coaches, how do you go about evaluating your staff? How do you relay that information to your staff? |
*Establish roles/responsibilites at the beginning, revisit throughout the season, be honest at the end |
*Need to trust that each person within the program is invested and willing to give 100 percent |
*Look smart, think smart, act smart and it starts with staff (on time, organized, level-headed)

4. How do you keep yourself in check by evaluating yourself (self-review)? |
*Pick out personal weaknesses related to what your role/responsibilites were at the start of season |
*As the head coach gives more responsibility it shows the trust and serves as a good evaluation |
*Asking questions of yourself and to the head coach of how you can grow and be the best you |
*Touch base with coaches you trust, who watch you and your team, coaches who coach against you

5. What type of things do you do to evaluate your team’s performance, growth, and potential as you begin preparations for next season? |
*Ceiling of team and players has to be understood so you can give reachable goals for growth |
*Show film of specific plays that highlight positives and negatives related to individual/team goals |
*Identify learning styles of players so you can properly reach them which will allow them to succeed |
*Leadership of players (juniors/seniors taking on more roles and bringing up sophomores/freshman)

6. How do you determine whether or not difficult decisions need to be made with a player or staff member on the team? |
*Consistent messages relayed to coaches and players start to finish will alleviate issues |
*Handling difficult conversations and decisions early will prevent team descention later on |
*Non-negotiables: 1. If you can’t accept your role then you may not be able to play in the program |
2. If you do not believe in your teammates or coaches then you may not be successful in the program

7. What other postseason evaluations do you do? |
*Awareness, effort, execution will translate to the entire team playing to the best of their ability |

*Staff evaluations… Establish/fulfill responsiblities at the beginning for head coach down to managers. |
*Did each player accomplish what they wanted individually and relating to the team? |
*Did you fulfill your individual role that we established in the beginning of the season? Why or why not? |
*Team/individual statistical identities that we established at the beginning of the year? Why or why not? |
*Team strengths and weaknesses (offensively, defensively, transition, etc.) |
