*Leadership |
| 1. How do you define leadership in a basketball program? |
| *Camaraderie – live, learn, lead mentality |
| *Influencing others to achieve a common goal |
| *”Leadership as no age.” (speak up even if you are younger)… there is always opportunity to lead |
| 2. How do you envision leadership looking in your program (from top-down)? |
| *Set a vision, values and principles which should be sold to the entire program |
| *Build a “team” to consistenly implement these principles throughout the season (reinforcement) |
| *Lead by example and make sure everyone has a voice (extension of the head coach) |
| 3. How do you give staff and players ownership in leadership categories? |
| *Give staff drill responsibility, voice in practice, PG is an extension of the coach on the floor |
| *”Tone at the top” – become the best version of yourself then lead staff, players, parents, etc. |
| *Player Autonomy – Let players become critical thinkers and fail at times to build back up and learn |
| 4. What other ways do you provide leadership? What other ways can you spread responsibility? |
| *Give quotes, video clips, motivational pieces to make everyone better |
| *Give opportunities to attend camps, reading material, makes you a “servant leader.” |
*Let players be authority (captains) at practice, within scouting report of the opponent |
*Culture |
| 1. How do you define culture in a basketball program? |
| *Inclusion, Equity, Access – this makes everyone feel the power to be included in the program |
| *CANI – Constant And Neverending Improvement (Growth Mindset especially through adversity) |
| *Extends off of the basketball court (school, community, etc) |
| 2. What do you want the culture to be (or look like) in your program? |
| *Players should feel a sense of belonging and players are rewarded for hard work and dedication |
| *Holding doors for others, please and thank you, eye contact, etc. |
| *Taking charges – rewarding, recognizing players doing the “little things” which builds up culture |
| 3. What is the first thing you do when establishing the culture within your program? |
| *First day of practice – learn how to shake hands, make eye contact, posture, confidence |
| *TEACH everything and don’t assume the players just know it. |
| *Overview what it means but cab ask the team what they want it to look like (creates “buy in”) |
| 4. How do you create a contagious culture among your players? |
| *Don’t just “say” what you want to see, model it, and change it if needed |
| *”Leave no trace” principle which comes from top, down model and implement team building ideas |
| *Team Building – implement throughout the year/off season (refocus, energize, trust, communication) |
| 5. What other ways do you establish the culture the way you want it within your program? |
| *Figure out your “WHY” or the end goals then figure out “HOW” you will get there |
*Commitment Monday, Tough Tuesday, Wisdom Wednesday, Thankful Thursday, Fun Friday, Servant Saturday (discuss each week and continue to build program) |
